SOLUS: A watchful eye on the perimeter

Jul 24, 2017 | 6936 Views

According to a recent Data Security survey- 69% responded saying that they are not confident that their organization’s data would be secure if their perimeter security was breached. If we move beyond data to the other elements in a typical organization – people, materials, assets- none of these would be safe in case of a security breach. So here is the million-dollar question- does your facility’s perimeter security program have what it takes to keep intruders out?

As the first line of defense against intruders and security breaches, effective perimeter protection should be an integral element of the security strategy for any business.

Perimeter security is no longer about razor wires and guard towers. Cutting edge surveillance systems, sensor-based alarms, RF scanners – that’s what perimeter security looks like today. For many organizations, protecting large geographical areas or multiple separate buildings or elements is a complex goal to achieve, involving continuous surveillance and immediate action in case of an incident.

CCTVs- The omnipresent eyes of the organisation

CCTVs continue to play an important role in keeping a watchful eye on critical perimeter areas. More recently, demand for high-definition (HD) CCTV has been on the increase, offering the potential to deliver a considerably higher level of surveillance in critical or high-risk areas, such as site entrances and exits, additionally providing detailed footage to help secure convictions should a security breach occur.

Moreover, to better secure the area, the implementation of Infrared scanners around the perimeter is highly effective in raising an alarm in case of intrusion.

Infrared sensors – detecting the presence

Infrared sensors use infrared technology to open automatic doors. The infrared sensors can detect a change in temperature. When the sensors detect a warmer temperature, representing a human, it will activate the opening and closing mechanism of the door. Infrared sensors are usually used as primary sensors in automatic door systems.

Solus uses this IR technology to detect any unwanted intrusion inside the perimeter and raises an alarm making the guards aware to take immediate action.

RFID systems

Another simple way to secure the perimeter is through radio-frequency identification (RFID) based access control system. It allows only authorized persons to enter a particular area of an establishment. The authorized persons are provided with unique tags, using which they can access that area.

RFID Technology is commonly used in schools, colleges, offices, and stations for various purposes to automatically authenticate people with valid RFID tags. This helps in the smooth entry for authorized people and the rest can be put through a thorough security check before entering.

Integrating perimeter security with the rest of the systems

Last, but not the least the perimeter security system should not be an island system working in isolation, but a well-integrated aspect of a well-planned strategy working in tandem with the rest of the systems within the organization. Think of automatic attendance registration for instance, or parking management. There is no limit to how much you can simplify and automate.
